On Friday, the first medical marijuana dispensary became open to the public in Chandler, with an incentive that drew in many. Free pot was the giveaway from Harvest of AZ. For every purchase made, the Center gave away up to 1/8 of an ounce as part of the Grand Opening celebration. As you can guess, this promotion brought in a steady stream of customers who hold medical marijuana cards. Steven White, the owner of the dispensary, believed that there was a need for a marijuana dispensary in southeast Valley. Harvest of AZ is near Arizona Avenue, located near Hunt Highway. With at least 4,000 people holding a medical marijuana card in the Chandler area, White realized that the center would be very convenient for customers. He expects even more will register for a card now that the center has opened. Arizona is one state out of 23 that currently has a medical marijuana program. Marijuana is still considered a Schedule I substance and the distribution of it is a federal offense. The medical marijuana programs are still considered a risky avenue to take, although currently federal prosecutors cannot prosecute anyone who sells medical marijuana within a state that allows it. There are still other matters that make it difficult for the sales of marijuana to continue. For example, many banks will not work with dispensaries because they fear problems with the government. This causes the centers to use cash only, as they cannot process credit cards. Security is on guard at the door to Harvest of AZ Chandler Dispensary, as well as many security cameras positioned inside and outside of the actual building. This location is the second for the company, with the first being at 40th Avenue and Indian School in Phoenix. The company hopes to employ at least 200 people between both centers by the end of the year.
